Tjardus van Citters studied Economics at the University of Groningen, and Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. His area of emphasis was media structures, and his thesis was about corporate image, what is now known as reputation management.
At that time, Tjardus was already a reserve officer in the Cavalry (platoon commander, tanks).
Since his graduation, Tjardus has worked for more than 20 years in communication and marketing management. Within that field, the media – online and offline – has been of great interest.
Two important steps distinguish his career. In 1999, he traded a management function at ING for a job as Marketing Manager at the World Wildlife Fund. And, in 2004, he made the transition from a salaried position at Nuon (Manager, Brand and Sponsoring) to self-employment, by creating Message Across.
With great pleasure and enthusiasm, Tjardus leads clients through their media appearances, and offers a distinct programme for their personal branding. In those endeavours, he borrows from the experience he gained in projects associated with: SBS6, Radio 1, RTV Rijnmond, NRC, FD, Marketingtribune, Adformatie and Tijdschrift voor Marketing (Journal of Marketing).
Guiding professionals in their career development was given a more formal status between 2009 and 2013, when he was a consultant and partner at Van Ede & Partners. In 1978, Van Ede & Partners first introduced outplacement in the Netherlands, and laid the groundwork for career counselling there. In line with that, professional coaching for highly educated individuals also began here.
Tjardus is Chairman of the Tj. Greidanus Foundation, which lends violins to classical and top musicians. He is also a member of the SAN (Advertisers) Jury, which annually assesses around 20 corporate communications campaigns.
Tjardus travels extensively to all continents. In his free time, he is an avid sportsman: long-distance running (five whole- and two half marathons) and golf are among his passions.
